Southwest Michigan is where Michigan meets Indiana, and where a Lake Michigan shoreline lined with dunes (part of the largest freshwater dune system in the world, according to Visit Southwest Michigan) sits beside harbor towns, lighthouse piers, fruit farms and wine tasting rooms. Inland, the college city of Kalamazoo adds museums, a nature center, an aviation museum and a rail trail that runs all the way to the lake.
Use this guide as your starting point. It explains how we define the region, compares eight cities side by side, and highlights what each one does best. It also covers the dunes, trails and wine country in between, a beach decoder that sorts state parks from local beaches, sample itineraries, a season planner, getting-around notes and beach safety. Each city section links to our full guide for that city.
What Counts as Southwest Michigan?
Like most Michigan regions, Southwest Michigan has no single official boundary. The Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council represents three counties: Berrien, Cass and Van Buren. That footprint covers the Lake Michigan shoreline from South Haven south to the Indiana border, plus inland communities such as Niles and Dowagiac.
We add one more: Kalamazoo. It is the region’s largest inland city, and it connects to the lakeshore by the Kal-Haven Trail and by Amtrak. Many definitions of Southwest Michigan also include the Kalamazoo area.
North of South Haven, the shoreline belongs to our West Michigan guide, which starts at Saugatuck-Douglas.

Explore Southwest Michigan City by City
St. Joseph: Beach, Carousel and Lighthouses
St. Joseph sits at the mouth of the St. Joseph River and is the region’s classic beach-and-downtown day. Its main beach is Silver Beach County Park, beside the Silver Beach Center. Inside the center, a carousel honors the original 1910 Silver Beach Amusement Park carousel, and the Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone offers hands-on play. Across the road, the Whirlpool Compass Fountain splash pad draws kids on hot days. St. Joseph’s other public beaches include Lions Park Beach and Tiscornia Park.
The two historic North Pier lighthouses are reached through Tiscornia Park on the north side of the river and can be seen from Silver Beach across the water. Up on the bluff and downtown, the Curious Kids’ Museum, the Krasl Art Center and the Box Factory for the Arts cover the indoor side of a visit.
Good to know: Amtrak’s Pere Marquette serves St. Joseph, which puts a beach town within reach of Chicago without a car. Read our St. Joseph guide →
Benton Harbor: Arts District, Dunes and Trails
Across the river from St. Joseph, Benton Harbor has its own draws. The Benton Harbor Arts District is home to galleries, studios, performing arts venues and public art, including orange metal sculptures on rooftops and walkways. On the lakefront, Jean Klock Park has a Lake Michigan beach and connects to the free, 12-mile Harbor Shores Nature & Fitness Trail System, according to Visit Southwest Michigan. The park charges vehicle admission.
Harbor Shores also has a public 18-hole golf course, with three holes perched on a dune overlooking Jean Klock Park and Lake Michigan. In Benton Harbor, Lake Michigan Vintners operates beside Lake Michigan College’s Welch Center for Wine & Viticulture and helps train future winemakers. If you are interested in local history, ask the visitor center about Mary’s City of David.
Good to know: The Southwest Michigan Travel Information Center is in Benton Harbor, just off I-94. Read our Benton Harbor guide →
South Haven: Harbor, Maritime History and a Rail Trail
South Haven sits at the mouth of the Black River and has long been a port town. Walk out on the South Pier to the red South Haven lighthouse, a classic spot for a Lake Michigan sunset. A short walk up the river, the Michigan Maritime Museum preserves the area’s nautical heritage and offers cruises on the Black River and sailing on Lake Michigan, including aboard its schooner Friends Good Will. The Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum honors the renowned horticulturist who was born and raised in South Haven.
For biking and hiking, the Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park runs roughly 33 miles along a former railroad bed from South Haven to Kalamazoo, with a crushed limestone surface. Closer to the water, Van Buren State Park has about a mile of Lake Michigan beachfront, towering dunes and a campground close to town. The Van Buren Trail State Park also connects the South Haven area with Hartford.
Good to know: Amtrak timetables list the Pere Marquette’s Bangor station as the stop for South Haven. Bangor is inland, so plan on a ride from there. Read our South Haven guide →
New Buffalo: The Chicago Getaway
New Buffalo sits in Michigan’s far southwest corner, near the Indiana border and just off I-94, and it is one of the easiest Michigan beach towns to reach without a car. Amtrak’s Wolverine service stops in New Buffalo, with connections to Chicago.
The Michigan DNR’s Great Lakes access map for southern Berrien County shows a string of public lakefront access points between Warren Dunes and the state line, including New Buffalo’s Pier Street Beach and several township and county beaches and preserves. Just inland, the DNR-managed Warren Woods Natural Area near Three Oaks adds forest hiking about seven miles from Warren Dunes.
Good to know: Local beaches have their own parking and permit rules, separate from the state Recreation Passport. Read our New Buffalo guide →
Bridgman: Weko Beach and the Dune Corridor
Bridgman sits right off I-94 between St. Joseph and New Buffalo, and its biggest draw is Weko Beach, a city-run park on Lake Michigan. Visit Southwest Michigan describes it as 42 acres of wooded dunes with a modern beach house, concessions, a boardwalk with two observation decks, and kayak and paddleboard rentals. It also has one of only three “direct access” boat launches in Michigan. A live bugler has played Taps at sunset nightly from Memorial Day to Labor Day for nearly 50 years. The campground has 68 sites and several rustic cabins, open from May through mid-October.
Weko adjoins Warren Dunes State Park, so a walk along the beach between the two is a popular early-spring hike. On clear days when conditions are right, the Chicago skyline is visible from Weko Beach.
Good to know: Weko Beach charges a seasonal per-vehicle parking fee set by the city, not the state Recreation Passport, so check the city’s current rates. Read our Bridgman guide →
Niles: The City of Four Flags
Niles sits on the St. Joseph River and has been under four national flags (France, Britain, Spain and the United States) in its 300-plus-year history, which is how it earned the nickname “City of Four Flags.” The Niles History Center, in historic downtown, is the site of the Fort St. Joseph Museum and the Chapin Mansion (circa 1882). The original fort stood on the riverbank just south of downtown, and Western Michigan University archaeologists, who located the site in 1998, have dug there nearly every year since.
For a quieter outdoor stop, Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve is a four-season destination along the river, with gardens, a nature preserve and a railroad garden that families love.
Good to know: Niles has an Amtrak Wolverine station. For the widest choice of hotels, the Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council points visitors to Benton Harbor, St. Joseph or Stevensville. Read our Niles guide →
Dowagiac: Paddling, Murals and Small-Town History
Dowagiac is the only city in rural Cass County, and the Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council highlights its Native American heritage, including the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, who were allowed to remain in Michigan during the forced removals of the 1830s. For a paddle, launch from the wetlands at the head of the Dowagiac River for a trip of about 1.5 hours, or head to the inland lakes of the neighboring Sister Lakes area.
In town, the Dowagiac Area History Museum tells local stories, and the Southwest Michigan Murals Challenge includes the “Welcome to Dowagiac” and “Orphan Train” murals. Southwestern Michigan College publishes an arts calendar, and the 235-acre Dowagiac Woods Nature Sanctuary is nearby. The historic train depot, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is still an Amtrak stop.
Good to know: You need a current Michigan fishing license to fish the region’s lakes and rivers. Read our Dowagiac guide →
Kalamazoo: Museums, Nature and a Trail to the Lake
Kalamazoo adds an inland, college-city side to a Southwest Michigan trip. Downtown, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum covers local history, science and technology, includes a planetarium, and is free to enter. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts focuses on American art, and the Kalamazoo Nature Center on the city’s north side offers 1,100 acres and roughly 15 miles of trails, open year-round for hiking and cross-country skiing.
In nearby Portage, the Smithsonian-affiliated Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum mixes historic aircraft (including an SR-71 Blackbird), flight simulators and amusement-style rides. I’ve toured the Air Zoo and there is no other experience like it in the state. Expect to spend half of a day there at the Air Zoo.
The Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, which runs 20-plus miles along the river, makes an easy bike outing. Car fans can day-trip to the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, northeast of the city.
Good to know: Kalamazoo has an Amtrak Wolverine station, and the Kal-Haven Trail connects it to South Haven by bike. Read our Kalamazoo guide →
Dunes, Trails and Wine Country Between the Cities
Warren Dunes State Park
Warren Dunes State Park, near Sawyer and Bridgman, is the region’s signature dune destination. The Michigan DNR calls it the unofficial gateway to Michigan’s state park system from the west. The park offers about three miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline, forested dunes, large open dunes and interdunal wetlands, along with a buoyed swim area, picnic areas, campgrounds and mini cabins. The address is 12032 Red Arrow Highway in Sawyer, an unincorporated community, and Bridgman is the nearest city. Read our Warren Dunes guide →
Grand Mere and Van Buren State Parks
Grand Mere State Park near Stevensville is known for dune scenery with fewer people than Warren Dunes. On clear days, the Chicago skyline is visible from Grand Mere. Van Buren State Park near South Haven has a one-mile Lake Michigan beachfront, towering dunes and a campground. Both require a Recreation Passport for vehicle entry.
Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail and Farm Country
Southwest Michigan’s lakeside climate supports vineyards and orchards. The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail is a collaboration of wineries in the Lake Michigan Shore American Viticultural Area (AVA), with a smaller Fennville AVA nested inside it. The trail’s own site says it was established in 2002, and member wineries use grapes grown within those AVAs. Member counts have varied over the years, so check the trail’s website for the current list.
Farm stops are just as big a draw. A 2026 regional data report from the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission notes that Berrien and Van Buren counties are among Michigan’s top specialty crop producers. The Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council promotes farm markets, u-pick farms and fruit festivals for crops such as cherries, peaches and blueberries, along with orchard blossoms in spring. Looking for blueberries specifically? See our statewide guide to u-pick blueberry farms in Michigan.
Southwest Michigan Beaches and Dunes, Decoded
Not every beach works the same way. Some Southwest Michigan beaches are state parks that need a Recreation Passport for vehicle entry. Others are city, township or county beaches with their own parking fees and rules. Use this table as a starting point and check locally before you go.
| Beach or park | Near | Type | State pass needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warren Dunes State Park | Sawyer and Bridgman | State park | Yes |
| Grand Mere State Park | Stevensville | State park | Yes |
| Van Buren State Park | South Haven | State park | Yes |
| Weko Beach | Bridgman | City park | No (city parking fee in season) |
| Jean Klock Park | Benton Harbor | Local park | No (vehicle admission) |
| Silver Beach County Park | St. Joseph | County park | No (check local parking rules) |
| Tiscornia Park | St. Joseph | Local park | No (check local rules) |
| Pier Street Beach | New Buffalo | Local beach | No (check local rules) |
About the Recreation Passport: It grants vehicle entry to all 103 Michigan state parks and recreation areas, plus state forest campgrounds and boating access sites. For 2026, the Michigan DNR lists the passport at $15 for Michigan-registered vehicles when added during license plate renewal. Out-of-state vehicles pay $42 for an annual pass or $12 for a day pass. You do not need one if you arrive on foot or by bicycle. Prices can change, so confirm on the Michigan DNR website.

Beach and Pier Safety on Lake Michigan
The Great Lakes have no tides, but they do have strong currents. The National Weather Service and Michigan Sea Grant warn that rip currents and currents near piers (called structural currents) can be extremely dangerous, and Lake Michigan has had more fatalities from dangerous nearshore currents than any other Great Lake. Southwest Michigan’s lighthouse piers at South Haven and St. Joseph are major attractions, so keep these basics in mind:
- Check the National Weather Service’s Great Lakes beach hazard forecast and the flag warning system before you swim.
- Stay out of the water around piers, breakwalls and river outlets, and avoid walking on piers when the surf is high.
- Set up your beach spot away from piers.
- If you are caught in a rip current, do not fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you are free.
